“Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools” is a new policy feature available in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Using this feature, you can configure a registry setting.
• You can open the Registry Editor either in interactive mode or in silent mode.
• Moreover, it is possible to start the registry editor only in Silent Mode just by using regedit /s. It is the default behavior in Windows 2000 and in Windows NT 4.0 when you apply the Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools policy.
• Remember, the Registry Editor can’t be started at all. Instead, the default behavior in Windows XP is used when the Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools policy is applied.
If you install this update, you can get an updated “System.adm” Group Policy file that lets you use the Group Policy to configure these options. If you want to do this, just follow the following steps.

1. Go to Start Menu and choose Run. Instead, you can press Windows Key + R Key to get the Run command.
2. Then type “gpedit.msc” in the Run command box and then click on OK.
3. Now, you can expand the User Configuration, Administrative Templates and System.
4. Then click Prevent Access to registry editing tools.
5. Now, you have to choose any one of the following options.
o Not Configured
o Enabled
o Disabled
6. If you go with “Enabled”, choose Yes or No in the Disable regedit from running silently? Box to specify if Registry Editor can be started in Silent Mode (regedit /s).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

1. Go to Start Menu and choose Run. Instead, you can press Windows Key + R Key to get the Run command.
2. Then type “regedit” in the Run command box and then click on OK. This will open the Registry Window in the Computer.
3. Then navigate to the following subkey in the registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools

a. Navigate to the following registry sub key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
b. Choose New from the Edit menu and then click Key.
c. Now, you can type the System for the name of the Key and then press Enter.
d. After that, navigate to the following subkey in the registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
e. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
f. Thereafter, click on the Edit menu and point to New.
g. Then click DWORD Value.
h. After that, type DisableRegistryTool for the name of the DWORD Value and then press Enter.
4. Right-click DisableRegistryTools, and then click Modify.
5. Once you finish the above process, right click DisableRegistryTools and then choose Modify.
6. After that, in the Value Data box, type the setting that you want to use from the table below given.

7. Then click OK and then Quit the Registry Editor.
